Varied interpretation of the KC breed standard in this country has led to a distinctive division between siberian "types". At the extreme end of the standard is a build that is commonly referred to as an "American Show Type". These often have a fuller coat and shorter leg length than those found in the UK.  At the far end of the spectrum are those siberians that have a lean, leggy build. These dogs often lack a thick artic coat that is typically associated with siberians.

Disagreements over which type is correct include

  • the shorter leg length found on some American Show Types, would render the dog unsuitable for fulfilling its purpose as a sled dog
  • the shorter coat length found on some sprint dogs would leave it ill-equipped to cope with cold weather conditions
  • the list is endless and the arguments ongoing!

The pictures opposite demonstrate the difference in the builds. NB.  Both of these dogs are Champions in their respective countries.
